ALLEN — The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats jumped right into the fire at the Allen softball tournament in the first round taking on a highly-touted Mesquite North team and coming away with a 3-1win.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the game reverted to a pitcher’s duel with the next four innings scoreless for both squads.
The Lady Cats rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the comeback victory.
Sulphur Springs had eight hits in the win. Top hitters were Kara Tomlinson who went 3-for-3 with two RBI; Katie Dodd was 2-for-3 with a run scored; pitcher Taylor Clifton had one RBI. Also getting hits were Krista McMahan and T’Kea Johnson.
Clifton got the win, pitching a complete game. She faced 25 batters, allowing five hits, one run and walking two in six innings.
The Lady Cats are now 8-1 for the year. Sulphur Springs played today at 11 a.m. against Sherman and will take on Mansfield Legacy at 5 p.m. in the second round of the tournament.
The Lady Cats continue to hit well, hitting .401 as a team. They have scored 82 runs, while allowing just 20.
