The Sulphur Springs Wildcats got a shutout Tuesday, downing North Lamar 3-0 in action played at Gerald Prim Stadium.
“I thought the guys played well. They played hard and had some intensity about them. I think they knew the importance of the game and they rose to the challenge,” said SS head boys soccer coach Andy Holt. “We had several opportunities in the first half and finally got one in.”
In the final 37 seconds, Bailey Booher played a set kick into the box, and Rodrigo Larios was there to finish. Holt said, “Bailey played a great ball and Rodrigo did an outstanding job of challenging the keeper for the ball and he won the challenge.”
Second half, North Lamar’s momentum was stopped by the Wildcat defense. As they stopped all shots on goal.
The second goal for the Wildcats was scored with about 10 minutes left in the game. Leo Becerra scored on a shot from 25 yards out. Five minutes later, Dylan Rutherford finished the third goal. Carlos Martinez found Dylan cutting across the middle of the box and Dylan beat the keeper.
“We had 14 shots to their five. We have Greenville here on Friday,” Holt said. “The first half of district is over and we are in second place three points behind Greenville. If we want a chance to contend for a district title we have to win on Friday.”
The junior varsity game Friday starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7:15 p.m.
