Follis leads Cats over Carthage

TYLER — Sulphur Springs pitcher Tyler Follis pitched well in the town by the same name, throwing a four-hitter as the Wildcats defeated traditional baseball power No. 8 ranked Class 3A Carthage, 6-4 in the second round of the Rose City Classic baseball event at Mike Carter Field.

    Wildcats head baseball coach Jerrod Hammack said, “Follis had a no-hitter through four innings. Carson Hicks led the way at the plate with two doubles.  Alex Burney, Brennan Brock, and Ben Brooks each had a double as well.”
    The Wildcats built a lead early with Carthage kept off the sacks.
    Sulphur Springs took a two-run lead as they pushed across two runs in the top of the third.
    Neither team scored in the fourth. Carthage managed a lone run in the botth of the fifth.
    Sulphur Springs had a single run in the top of the sixth. Carthage crept close pushing across two runs in the bottom of the frame.
    The Wildcats padded their lead with three runs in the top of the seventh to go up 6-3. Carthage scored only once in the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats claimed the 6-4 win to advance their record to 2-1 for the year. Carthage fell to 0-3.
    The Wildcats play Robert E. Lee at 4:45 p.m. Saturday.
    “We look forward to playing Tyler Lee to see if we can sustain our high level of play,” added Hammack.
