Cats beat Dragons, lose to Atlanta

TYLER — The Sulphur Springs Wildcats started the baseball season off with a win, downing Nacogdoches, 11-8 in the  Rose City Classic.
    The Wildcats won the afternoon tilt with steady pitching and timely hitting.

    Ben Brooks got the pitching win for the Wildcats.
    Sulphur Springs had 11 runs of eight hits, making one error. The Dragons scored eight times off nine hits, making two errors.
    The Wildcats were the visiting team and took a three run lead to open the first inning. Nacogdoches responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. The Dragons took the lead at 4-3 after another two-run rally.
    Sulphur Springs scored one in the top of the third, then exploded for five runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
    The Wildcats lost 11-6 to Atlanta in the second game Thursday.
    Atlanta scored two runs in the first inning, but did most of their damage with a six-run fourth frame.
    “Ethan Phillips, Brennan Brock  and Carson Hicks were the top hitters. We lost the second game to Atlanta 11-6.  Hunter Coleman took the loss.  Tyler Williams hit a triple and Ethan Phillips continued his hot streak.  We look forward to the challenge of Carthage.  Tyler Follis will get the ball,” said Jerrod Hammack, Sulphur Springs head baseball coach.
    The Wildcats (1-1) play Carthage today at 12:15 p.m. The Bulldogs lost 5-1 to Lufkin Thursday.
