Lady Cats split softball games

ALLEN — The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats opened the Allen Tournament with a hard-fought 7-6 win over Coppell.
    The Lady Cats had 10 hits in the contest and made the most of them.

    Hailey Chester was 2-for-3 with two runs knocked in. Sarah Womack was 3-for-3 with a triple, one run plated. Makayla Glosson, Kiara Johnson, Molly Johnston, Sierra Nickerson and Melanie Ford had one hit each.
    The Lady Cats scored once in the second inning and added four more in the third. Coppell rallied for three runs. Sulphur Springs added their final two runs in the late innings holding on for the 7-6 win.
    Katie Sapaugh pitched all five innings. She allowed six runs (three earned) off eight hits, two walks while fanning seven batters.
    Sapaugh threw 71 pitches, 55 for strikes.
    The Lady Cats were not as fortunate in the second game Thursday, losing to Frisco Centennial by a 9-6 final.
    Glosson, hitting leadoff the Lady Cats was 2-for-3 including a home run, plating three runs in the game. Katie Barnett belted a double with a 2-for-2 performance also knocking in three.
    Getting one hit each were Jaleigh Avery, Ford  and Johnston.
    Womack was the losing pitcher. She went four innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned runs) off 11 hits, walking four and striking out two.
    The Lady Cats play today at 1 p.m. against Allen and a 4 p.m. against South Grand Prairie.
    Saturday games include a 9 a.m. matchup against Richland and a 1:30 p.m. contest vs. McKinney North.
