SS tennis team seventh in Kilgore event

KILGORE — The Sulphur Springs tennis team took seventh from a 16-team field at the recent Kilgore Tournament.

    Tommy Helffrich and Jonathan Philo won the consolation side of the bracket beating Pine Tree 8-3 in the consolation finals, and Kezli Cook won first place in the Girls singles division 7-5,7-6(7-3) in the finals against Wills Point.  
    Other highlights were Jayce Johnson and Jesse Allen received 6th place in boys A doubles Morgan Sutton and Abbey Martin received fifth place in girls A doubles, Magan Smith received seventh place in girls B singles, Anne-Marie Winborn and Kade Brown finished eighth place in mixed A doubles and Jaspyn Johnson and Karolina Espinoza finished in eighth place in girls B doubles according to Sulphur Springs head tennis coach Randal Namanny.
    The coach said, “The Kilgore tournament was a great tournament for us.  We did well and we also ended up with some medals coming home with us as well.  The players and I really like the tournament because each event was guaranteed at least three matches, some even got four.  This made it a long day but it was great to get that many matches in.  The weather was beautiful and I think that helped us out a lot.”
    Namanny added, “Overall it was a successful tournament.”
    The team plays in tournament action Friday in Tyler.
