Lady Cats win regional quarterfinal game

    ROCKWALL —The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats erupted for 13 points in a five-minute span of the third period to blow open a close game, leading to a 50-32 rout of Mansfield Lake Ridge.
    The Class 4A regional quarterfinal at Rockwall High School game was going  as planned, living up to billing as a close contest.

Then in the third period, Sulphur Springs got the hot hand, outscoring the Lady Eagles 19-6. The Sulphur Springs defense also doing a number of the Lady Eagles.
    When the smoke had cleared the Lady Cats had a big lead they protected as they won by the 53-40 final.
    Desi Debase had 24 points to lead the Wildcats. She had 10 in the third period alone. She shot 77 percent.
    The Lady Cats advance to the regional tournament for the first time since 2001-2002. Sulphur Springs meets The Colony at the Culwell Center in Garland, Friday at 6 p.m.
    "We got our defense tightened up in the third period. They were guarding tight on Shakoja, but forgetting about our posts," Debase said."We scored and starting running and scoring in transition. We were pushing the ball down the floor and we just kept on scoring."
    Destiny Wade, one of the post players mentioned, got 15 points and 12 rebounds for a double with an outstanding game in the lane. Kasey Moore scored six points and pulled down 13 boards.
    Top scorer for Mansfield Lake Ridge was Kennedy Burks with eight points.
    The first half ended with Sulphur Springs a step quick and five points better. The Lady Cats were up 23-18 after two frames.
    The key third period began for Sulphur Springs and the scoring started. Chrissalynd Person got free and dished off a perfect pass to Wade in the paint for bucket. Wade again scored on a Person assist after missing two free throws. Marina Hawkins scored for Lake Ridge to make it a 27-20 lead with 3:58 left in the third period. Then Sulphur Springs got a 3-pointer from Shakoja Debase from the top of the circle to pad the lead to 10 points, 30-20. Desi Debase hit one of two free shots, then stepped back and drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 34-20. Person found Wade open again and the 6-1 senior post turned and scored with a nice shot off the window. Wade then got a steal and dished to Desi Debase for a layup. Lake Ridge tried to stop the onslaught, calling a time out with 2:14 left in the third, down by a 38-20 score. Desi Debase added two more breakaway buckets. The third period ended with old man momentum wearing a Lady Cats jersey, Sulphur Springs had a 42-24 lead and it was all over except the shouting.
    Sulphur Springs spread the floor and ran the clock in the fourth period. The Lady Eagles even tried to double and triple team Desi Debase, but it was too late. Lake Ridge could not get anything going and had to foul. Each team scored eight points in the final period. The Lady Cats taking the 50-32 victory.
    In the first quarter Kasey Moore made an early contribution with a bucket and several rebounds. Desi Debase scored on a layup. Lake Ridge got points form Hawkins and Kristian Dewitt. Wade got a bucket in the blocks to give the Lady Cats a lead at 9-8. Desi Debase then drew in the defense and dished off to Wade for another bucket. Moments later, Desi Debase closed out the first period with a shot and pop shot in the lane which swished the net. The opening period ended with Sulphur Springs holding a 13-8 lead.
    The second period was more of the same - as good rebounding by Moore and Wade allowed the Lady Cats to score on second chance buckets. Desi Debase hit a 14-footer, then made two charity shots. Kasey Moore turned a rebound into a putback bucket in the paint to make the score 21-14. Amber Garcia came in for a bucket and Anna Chambless scored for the Lady Eagles. The Lady Cats were content to go into halftime with a 23-18 lead.
    The second half saw the Lady Cats outscore Lake Ridge, 27-14. Sulphur Springs claimed the win and advanced in the playoffs with the 50-32 win.
    “We did a good job overall, this is exciting to win and keep going. This is all new ground for me,” said Jeff Chapman, Lady Cats head coach. “When we play like we did against Lake Ridge we are a pretty good team. We knew which players to defense. Then, Desi got her regular points, Destiny and Kasey rebounded well. Shakoja and Chrissalynd Person did a good job passing the ball.”
