Four Lady Cats scored in double figures as they downed Mount Pleasant 57-41 in District 14-4A to clinch a playoff berth.

Sulphur Springs popped the net for eight 3-pointers in the game for the big win. The Lady Cats advanced to 21-4, 6-2 in district. Mount Pleasant fell to 4-4.
Shakoja Debase and Desi Debase tied for top scoring honors with 16 each. Destiny Wade and Chrissalynd Person had 10 points each. Desi Debase had six deflections, nine assists, three rebounds, two steals. Kasey Moore topped the team with nine rebounds, she also scored four points. Lexie Moore had one point to round out the scoring.
"We clinched a spot in the playoffs, I just don't know what spot yet," said Jeff Chapman, Sulphur Springs head girls basketball coach. "We are second place behind Texas High right now. That is our second win over Mount Pleasant so we have an edge on them with two games left."
The 41 points allowed was the most surrendered by Sulphur Springs in more than two weeks of district play. Shakyra Hutchings had 15 to pace the visitors while 6-1 post player Genesis Alvarez was held to nine points.
"They wanted to beat us inside and control the baseline, but we played tight defense," Chapman said. "We would not let them get the shots they wanted. I am happy to get the win. Mount Pleasant would not go away in the game. I wanted to get the lead to 20, but Mount Pleasant stayed close. Their man-to-man defense was surprise early in the game and then they went to a zone. They were helping out on Desi and we knew what to do."
The first quarter was no textbook for offensive basketball by either team. Desi Debase scored to open the game. Hutchings and Alvarez made free throws in the show paced game. Person missed her first shot, but found the range on next attempt and popped the twine for a 3-point to give the Lady Cats a 6-4 lead halfway through the first quarter. Labrisha Hargrave canned a 3-pointer off the glass for the Lady Tigers and Hutchings connected on a short range baseline jumper. Mount Pleasant went up 9-7. Wade scored late and the first period ended with Sulphur Springs on the short end of an 11-9 score.
The Lady Cats got busy in the second frame, outscoring Mount Pleasant 20-11. Here's how it happened. Shakoja Debase connected on a set shot to give the Lady Cats the lead, 12-11. Alvarez scored in the paint and Mount Pleasant edged back ahead. Wade dished off a nice pass to streaking Desi Debase for bucket. Lexie Moore came off the bench to connect on one of two free throws and with 5:52 left in the first half, the Lady Cats were up 15-13. Mount Pleasant kept hanging around and Alvarez scored to tie the game at 15-all. Shakoja Debase bounced in a 3-pointer. But Mount Pleasant stayed even when Alvarez got three points, the old-fashioned way. She scored while getting fouled and sank the following free throw make it an 18-all game. The final 4:07 of the first half saw Sulphur Springs go on an 11-4 outburst. Desi Debase pulled up and dialed long distance for a 3-pointer. Then Wade scored two in the paint with a nice shot off the glass. Person added a bucket to extend the lead . Mount Pleasant was called for traveling, giving the Lady Cats a scoring opportunity with 55.5 left in the second frame. Shakoja Debase connected on an inside bucket to make it 27-22 with 29 ticks left in the first half. Mount Pleasant was unable to score, the Lady Cats got the ball back in the final seconds of the first half and made the most of the chance. Shakoja Debase popped the net on a 2-pointer at the buzzer. Mount Pleasant coaches argued the call, but it held up and the first half ended with Sulphur Springs holding a 29-22 advantage.
The Lady Cats extended their lead in the third frame and they bolted out of the blocks with a 16-9 scoring run.     Shakoja Debase made a 3-pointer on her first shot attempt of the second half. Kasey Moore hit a turnaround shot for an inside bucket. Desi Debase got free for a fast break and got two points on a scoop shot off the glass to extend the lead to 38-27. The Lady Cats continued the hot streak with Wade scoring off a put back put in the lane, turning an offensive rebound into a bucket. Person stepped up and swished the net with a 3-pointer. Kasey Moore added another score in the lane and the third period ended with Sulphur Springs now in command, 45-31.
The Lady Cats could not relax, despite the lead with Mount Pleasant still playing a strong game. Shakoja Debase hit her final 3-pointer with 6:37 left for the Lady Cats. Mount Pleasant answered with Hutchings and Nikki Martin scoring. The Lady Cats then got five points in rapid-fire order. Wade scored on a short range bucket in the paint. Desi Debase turned a fast break into another score to make it a 55-39 game. Desi Debase then faked out the Lady Tigers, not scoring when she had the next opportunity, but dishing to Person for a transition score. The Lady Cats won the game by the final of 57-41.
"We'd had an emphasis on offense in practice, so I guess we give defense more work," Chapman said. "This was a big win, now we have to take care of business Friday against Texas High."
