BIRTHRIGHT — The North Hopkins Lady Panthers used a 16-7 fourth quarter run to break open a tight game and defeat Detroit 54-43 taking one step closer to a playoff bid. With James Bowie falling to Avery 47-25 the Lady Panthers now have a half-game lead over the Lady Pirates going into Friday night's homecoming season finale. Bowie still has two games to play. North Hopkins stands at 5-6 with Bowie falling to 4-6 in District 16-A.
Four Lady Panthers hit in double figures led by Kelsey Buchanan with 11, and Chelsey Crouch, Allegra Thomas and Sheyenne Mitchell each had 10 each.
Crouch also had 10 rebounds, while Buchanan and Mitchell each had eight boards. Baile Gammill held high-scoring Detroit guard Sheltyn Wagner to two first half field goals.
"I was really proud of Buchanan and Crouch for stepping up in this game. Buchanan had her best game in district," Lady Panthers head basketball coach Larry Tucker said. "Mitchell got in foul trouble but came back to play well in the second half making a big difference and Thomas just keeps on making plays when we need them. Gammill's defense on Wagner was tremendous and Flanagan (Brittany) did a good job defensively."
The Lady Panthers raised their season record to 15-13 with the district slate at 5-6.
A win Friday against McLeod gives North Hopkins at least a share of third place pending the outcome of Bowie's final two contest.
"We have literally been in a win or go home mode the second half of district," Tucker said. "We have one more to go and we will see what happens from there."
