opens season
    The Sulphur Springs varsity softball team will scrimmage  Thursday at White Oak.

    The contest was originally set for earlier in the week, but changed due to cold weather.
    The Lady Cats scrimmage White Oak at 5 p.m. and take on Gladewater at 6:15 p.m.
    On Saturday, the Lady Cats junior varsity will scrimmage at Rockwall. They scrimmage Rockwall at 3:30 p.m. and then take on The Colony at 6:30 p.m.
    On Saturday, Feb. 1 the varsity is at Rockwall. The Lady Cats play The Colony at 10:45 a.m., vs. Rockwall at 2:15 p.m. and   North Forney, 4 p.m.
    On Feb. 4, the junior varsity and varsity scrimmage at Lindale. The JV plays Lindale at 4 p.m. with the varsity playing Lindale at 6 p.m.
    On Feb. 8, the varsity Lady Cats play at Lone Star. They face Royse City at 11 a.m. and play Lone Star at 12:10 p.m.
    On Feb. 8 the squad plays junior varsity scrimmages at North Lamar. At 11 a.m. Sulphur Springs plays North Lamar; at 12:30 p.m. Sulphur Springs plays Prairiland at 12:30 p.m.

    The Saltillo junior high boys split recent basketball games.
    The team defeated Yantis 48-41. Scorers were:  Michael Simmons 18, Branson McGill 8, Lyle Bench 8, Nathan Valenzuela 4, Walker McGill 4, Ben Moore 4, Matthew Gurley 2.
    The teams also played in the  Mount Vernon Tournament.
    The A team lost 28-19 to host school Mount Vernon. Scorers were: McGill 6, Simmons 5, Valenzuela and Moore 4 each.
    Saltillo then defeated Winnsboro 32-19.
    The B team lost 45-9 to Mount Vernon. Scorers were: Jace Dunlap 4, Matthew Gurley 3, Canyon Davis 2.
    The same team fell 41-21 to Winnsboro. Scorers were: Gurley 8, Dunlap 7, Davis 5, Hoover 1.
