Avery 34, NH girls 24
AVERY — The North Hopkins Lady Panthers fought the good fight, but fell to playoff bound Avery 34-24 Friday night. The Lady Panther defense shut down the Avery offense, but could not find the bucket most of the night.

"Our game plan was to play tough defense and slow the ball down," Lady Panthers head coach Larry Tucker said. "We did that, but just did not have enough offense. Chelsey Crouch had a good game with 10 points and seven rebounds." Also scoring for North Hopkins were Baile Gammill with five, Miranda Rushin four, Sydney McQueen and Kelsy Buchanan two each and Allegra Thomas 1.
Avery led 17-11 at the half and a 12-4 edge in the third quarter gave Avery a 29-15 edge going into the final quarter. The Lady Panthers outscored Avery 9-6, holding them to just two field goals, but it wasn't enough.
But it was not all bad news. The Lady Panthers got word that Maud defeated Bowie 42-39 leaving North Hopkins still just one game behind the Lady Pirates for the final District 16-A playoff slot.
"We have to beat Detroit and McLeod this coming week, but Bowie still has to play Avery, Detroit and McLeod. If they lose one and we win two, we will be tied," Tucker added. "We are excited to still have a chance to do something we haven't done in a long time around here. My girls just don't give up. The playoffs for us start Tuesday."
North Hopkins host Detroit Tuesday night on "Teacher Appreciation" night. Friday night will be the Lady Panthers Senior night and Homecoming 2014.
"It's going to be an exciting week at North Hopkins. Our boys are undefeated in district and state-ranked, the girls have a playoff shot and it's homecoming week," Tucker said. "My senior girls have shown my younger players what it means to be a real team."
Lady Panther seniors to be honored Friday are Kelsey Buchanan, Chelsey Crouch, Brittany Flanagan and Chelsea Houser.

The Cumby Trojans stayed close in the first half, but could not keep up with Boles, losing 67-47 in district boys basketball action Friday.
The Trojans got 15 points from Noah Dyer and a dozen from Cody Anderson in the loss.
