Wildcats earn academic honors

Seven football players from Sulphur Springs recently received all-state academic honors.

    Alex Burney was named to the elite squad. Parker Heath was listed on the first team and Tyler Williams on the second team. Named honorable mention were Ross Cody, Codey Farley, Garret Hood and Isaiah Lacy.
    The team was presented by the Texas High School Coaches Association and the United States Marines.
    “This is a great honor for these young men. They are not only outstanding young men and good athletes, but have performed at a very high academic level to be recognized at the state level,” said Greg Owens, Sulphur Springs head football coach and athletic director.
    The THSCA will be recognizing all-state athletes in 13 different sports, including boys and girls athletics.
    To be nominated for all-state the student must be: an athlete, student trainer in good standing with team, of good moral character, a senior, have an overall grade point average of 92 or above (including courses from grades 9-11 and courses completed from grade 12.
    The top team a player can make is the Elite team, as player must have near perfect scores in all categories.
    The hierarchy then follows in this order: first team, second team and honorable mention.
