LONGVIEW — The Sulphur Springs Wildcats used balanced scoring and steady defense to take a 45-33 win over Pine Tree in District 14-4A boys varsity basketball competition.
The Wildcats advanced to 2-2 in district to even their record, Pine Tree fell to 0-4.

“We controlled the game from the start. We had a 12-point lead and then we continued to play well,” said Jeremy Josey, Sulphur Springs head basketball coach. “It was not a pretty game. Pine Tree wanted to play slow and make it ugly. The game was played a slow pace, but we did a good job handling it.  A win is a win, especially in district.”
Post player Cain Cody led the team with 12 points, Javaron Ross added 11 as the top scorers for the Wildcats. A total of seven Wildcats scored in the rout.
Sulphur Springs came out of the blocks quickly, racing to 12-9 lead. The Wildcat defense held the Pirates to four points in the second frame while scoring eight. At the half, it was the visiting squad holding a 20-13 lead.
The Wildcats continued to play well in the second half and outscored the Pirates in every quarter. Sulphur Springs took the important district win by the 45-33 final.
“We played man-to-man defense to keep it simple against Pine Tree and it worked,” Josey said. “They played slow and kept slowing it down which doesn’t fit what we like to do. But we were pleased to get the win.”
