The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats are just one game into the District 14-4A girls basketball race, but they don’t want to fall back in the standings.
The Lady Cats are 15-3 overall, 0-1 in district. Sulphur Springs lost 58-45 in Longview against Pine Tree in the recent district opener.

The Lady Cats host Marshall (5-12, 0-1) for two games today at the Sulphur Springs High School gym.             The junior varsity game is at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.
Marshall is coming off an 86-51 home loss at the hands of Texas High.
“I really don’t know what to expect from Marshall. I scouted them earlier in the year in person and they looked pretty good. Then on video they were not the same team,” said Jeff Chapman, Sulphur Springs head girls basketball coach.
“They are usually athletic and quick,” Chapman said. “I think they are improved over last year.”
Chapman is trying to get his team back to form they held earlier in the year when they took wins over teams like Canton, John Tyler and Lindale.
“We have not been playing well on defense and were are going to emphasize that tonight,” Chapman said. “We need to have a really good game defensively. If we play defense well, I know we will be OK. Lately, it seems like we been confused on defense. That is my fault, we have been trying different things.”
Chapman said he would also like to see the Lady Cats score more throughout the lineup.
“We need at least four girls in double figures,” Chapman said. “We don’t run that much of a half court offense. When we are going well we are scoring in transition and off steals and runouts. We need to be very active on defense and that sparks our offense. We need this win, we want to be 1-1 going into our next game and not drop back any more.”
