BRIDGEPORT — The Sulphur Springs Wildcats salvaged a split from a pair of games Friday in the opening round of the Bridgeport Christmas basketball tournament.
In the opener, the Wildcats had a bad third quarter, leading to a 60-43 loss at the hands of Flower Mound of Lewisville. In the second game, the Wildcats rallied for a 59-57 win over Wichita Falls High.

For a half, it was a draw.
The teams traded hoops early. The Wildcats were on the short end of a 19-17 score after one frame.
In the second period, both teams had trouble scoring. The Wildcats posted just six points while the Jaguars were held to four. The first half ended with Sulphur Springs and Flower Mound knotted at 23-all.
Then disaster struck for the Wildcats in the third period. Sulphur Springs fell behind, then had a poor shot selection as they tried desperated to come back, but nothing would fall. The smoke cleared and the third period ended with Flower Mound riding a 18-4 run. The Wildcats were down 41-27 as action shifted to the final period.
The Wildcats and Flower Mound each scored 17 in the fourth period. The points were not enough for Sulphur Springs to overcome the deficit. The Wildcats fell by the final of 60-43.
Cain Cody had 13 points for top scoring honors for Sulphur Springs. Isaiah Lacy had 12 in a losing cause.
"We put up too many poor shots in the third quarter. Flower Mound got hot and made a run. It was over, the third quarter was the big difference in the game," said Jeremy Josey, Sulphur Springs Wildcats head coach. "They had an 8-0 run at one point. We just never recovered."
Josey said, "I though our defense and rebounding were pretty good in the first half. In the second half, we gave up too much in transition. We just had a hard time being successful in the third period. Flower Mound also hit some 3s, they’re a good team. They’re my pick to win the tournament."

Lacy had 15 and Cody added 11 points as the Wildcats rebounded later Friday for a 59-57 win over Wichita Falls in a tightly-contested game.
"We'd get a lead of about six points and they (Wichita Falls) would come right back," Josey said. "They never had a big lead on us. It was pretty close the whole way. It was a game of runs. We had a scoring run at the end and that won it for us."
Josey said, "It was a much better performance than the first game... but was against a different kind of team. We played well and got after them. Wichita Falls had a two point lead going into the final quarter. But we stayed together and had a comeback at the end. We hit some big free throws late. It was a physical game, we had some people foul out."
The coach said the Wildcats were called for 22 fouls, Wichita Falls whistled for seven.
"We had to overcome things in the game and we did it," Josey said. "We played well late. Lacy scored six points in the fourth quarter. Darian Dial-Hall had seven points, including a 3-pointer. We did a good job of attacking their press. We played good man-to-man defense. We switched it up. Wichita Falls had some size, but our post players did well. They were very athletic. I was pleased how we bounced back and got a win."
The Wildcats (7-7) play at noon against Wichita Falls Hirschi on Saturday for their first of two games.
"We watched them (WF Hirschi) and they are very athletic. They fly around. They will be another good game for us in comparison with the teams we will see in district."
