KAUFMAN — Sulphur Springs ended the first day of the Kaufman Tournament with a big win over North Forney to balanced out a day which began with a disappointing close loss.

The Lady Cats (13-2) opened tournament play Friday morning, getting nipped 47-39 by the Jacksonville Maidens. In the second game Friday, Sulphur Springs came out on the winning side of the ledger against North Forney, 36-30.
"We were rusty against Jacksonville," admitted Jeff Chapman, Sulphur Springs head girls basketball coach. "I know everybody has the five-day break, but it hurt the way we play our game. We had poor shooting in the probably our worst game of the year. Jacksonville hit some shots on us, but we were still in the game into the fourth period. In the fourth quarter we had too many mistakes. We were not fluid, we had no rhythm."
The Lady Cats made just 29 percent of two point field goals, (15 of 51) and hit just 1 of 9 from three-point land.
Chapman said, "Jacksonville played a good man-to-man defense on us. We were not hitting, Shakoja Debase or Chrissalynd Person did not score from the outside. Desi Debase had trouble with her shots."
"In the second game, we played better and beat North Forney," Chapman said. "We were up 27-21 in the fourth period, then North Forney had a five point run to cut it down to a two point lead. But we played well late and were able to get the win."
Chapman said, "Destiny Wade had a really good game.  She played really well against North Forney and did the things we discussed that I wanted her to do in the game."
"We still are not back to our game we had going before the break," Chapman said. "When we have all five players working well, scoring and doing what we do, we have a good chance against most teams."
