Lady Cats win twice in tourney

EDGEWOOD — The Sulphur Springs varsity Lady Cats took two wins to advance in the winner’s bracket at the Edgewood Tournament.
    The basketball action was fierce and lasted late into the night. Sulphur Springs won in morning action 56-42. Then after waiting around between games won the 8:30 p.m. game in double overtime 60-57 over Dallas Christian of Mesquite.

    “It was a long day of it. We played well against Mineola, got a big lead and then relaxed. That let them get back in it, but we still won,” said Jeff Chapman, Sulphur Springs head girls basketball coach. “The second game was double overtime, our first game like that this year. We won it, I think we got kind of tired.”
    In the Mineola game, Sulphur Springs came out strong, bolting to a 17-6 lead after one quarter. But intermission, the Lady Cats were up 37-19. Sulphur Springs slowed down in the second half, but won by a 56-42 final.
    Desi Debase had 20 points, 11 steals, 8 deflections to lead the way. Shakoja Debase stayed hot from long distance, scoring 13 points swishing four 3-pointers. Destiny Wade had 8 points, 8 boards.
    It took double overtime for the Lady Cats to win over Dallas Christian.
    Desi Debase had 26 points including a 3-pointer from the outside. The inside game was dominated by Wade who had a double-double scoring 18 and snatching 13 rebounds. Kasey Moore added 9 rebounds and four points.
    Sulphur Springs is 8-1 for the year.
    The Lady Cats play against a foe to be decided later at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the semi-finals with a win to send them to the championship game at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
