    Crowds were good at both basketball tournaments underway in the county.

Freeman Parish Tournament


    BIRTHRIGHT — The homestanding North Hopkins Panthers won twice in the opening round of the Freeman Parish Tournament.
    The Panthers won 57-31 over Cooper in first round play with three North Hopkins players scoring in double figures.
    Silas Whaley topped the list with 13 points, Jessie Williams added 11 and Kevin Meza scored 10.
    “Our defense was exceptional today. We really challenged ourselves to recommit to defense in practice. We played with a great amount of effort and intensity,” said Todd Law, North Hopkins head boys basketball coach.
    North Hopkins won 58-42 over Mount Vernon in the second game of the day as the Panthers ran their season mark to 10-3 under coach Law.
    The Panthers got 13 from Tarence Berry while Whaley tossed in 10.
    In other action - the C.H.E.S.S. Knights won 64-58 over Leonard.
    Austin McKim had a double-double with 21 points, 15 rebounds for Knights. Austin South added 18 points and Nick Gonzalez contributed 12.
    The Knights played a second game, edging Prairiland, 45-44.
    C.H.E.S.S. fell behind early, but closed out with a 26-7 run in the final period to take the win.
    South scored 16, Gonzalez added 11 and McKim tossed in 10.
    The Knights are 12-3 for the year under head coach Donnie South.
    South said, “We down 37-19 going into the fourth quarter. We decided to go all our pressing and shooting 3’s. We got super energy from Austin South who scored 11 in the fourth period. Gonzalez hit two free throws late and sealed the win. This was the biggest comeback in my 10 years as C.H.E.S.S. coach.’

    SULPHUR BLUFF — The first round of play saw exciting games from participants
    The North Hopkins Lady Panthers outlasted the Paris JV Lady Wildcats scoring a 49-34 victory.
    Sophomore Allegra Thomas put in 16 points and hauled down 12 rebounds for North Hopkins. Brittany Flanagan came in and hit seven of her nine points in the second stanza to give North Hopkins a 25-16 halftime cushion.
    The Lady Wildcats closed the gap to 31-28 in the third quarter before Thomas got hot and hit for eight third quarter points to give the Lady Panthers a 39-30 lead going into the final period. North Hopkins defense held Paris to just four points in the final quarter to secure the win.
    Rounding out the scoring for North Hopkins was Kelsey Buchanan with seven, Chelsey Crouch with six, Baile Gammill five, with Miranda Rushin, Sydney McQueen and Sheyenne Mitchell each hitting two points.
    "We still have too many turnovers and foul too much, but our defensive effort was there," Lady Panthers head coach Larry Tucker said. "Allegra Thomas really had a great game today. It was a solid team win."
    The Lady Panthers are now 7-8 for the season.
    The Lady Panthers will faced Como-Pickton at 10:30 Friday in the second round of the tournament.
