The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats  begin the basketball season tonight hosting North Lamar at the SSHS gym.
The freshman game will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity to follow at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7:15 p.m.

Seeing playing time tonight will be varsity team members for the Lady Cats - Desi Debase, point guard; Destiny Wade, Kasey Moore and Chaliyah Moore at post; Chrissalynd Person at guard and point guard; forwards, Daieysha Pruitt and Shakoya Debase at forward/wings.
“We beat Rains in our scrimmage 58-35. We are still getting in shape for basketball after many of the girls were in volleyball,” said Jeff Chapman, Sulphur Springs head girls basketball coach. “But, this early in the year, you teach and coach on the fly. You don’t get that much practice time.”
“In the win over Rains, we got 35 points from Desi Debase. She can score that many points, but we would like to have balanced scoring,” Chapman said. “Near the end of the year last season we were getting about 8 points and 8 rebounds from  Moore and about 8 points and 9 rebounds a game from Wade.”
Chapman said, “If players don’t score, then they need to contribute rebounding and on defense. I was not really pleased with our defense against Rains. We let them do what they wanted to do. We need to play better and let our defense dictate what the opponent can do.”
Chapman said he did not know what to expect with the North Lamar team which is under the guidance of a new coach.
“I’ve heard they could use a 1-2-2 zone. I really don’t know,” Chapman said. “I am more concerned about what we will do. We want to play well, it’s our first game at home. We’d like to score close to 50 and allow 35-39 points. We will be using our half court trap, some man-to-man defense. We’d like to get lots of players involved in the game.”
