Two county teams were in  volleyball postseason action Tuesday, splitting two matches against tough opponents.

Cumby 3, Gary 2
MINEOLA — The Lady Trojans battled all night and held on to win bi-district in playoff action against Gary in fierce competition at Mineola.
    Cumby won in five games:  25-19, 17-25, 6-25, 25-22, 17-15.
“I am so proud of what these girls accomplished last night against Gary.  Last night's match was a reflection of our season so far.  When you look at the scores from last night you see the ups and downs,” said Shelley Jones, Cumby head volleyball coach. “The first game we came out composed and strong in our game plan.  The second and third games we struggled and could not get anything going.  The fourth game the girls found a way to come together and fight.  In the fifth game we started out behind, 8-1 and again, the girls fought back.”
The coach added, “The girls have had to overcome and adjust to so many things this season.  It has literally been a different lineup almost every week since we got into district. Injuries, illnesses, and conflicting schedules have been constant obstacles for this group.  Some girls have had to make huge position changes, so for them to be where they are right now shows a lot about their character.”
    Cumby standouts were: Candice Horrocks - 8 points, 3 kills, 6 assists, 4 aces, 1 dig; Grace Campbell - 10 points, 1 ace, 5 kills, 3 assists, 7 digs, 1 block; Alex Duck - 8 points, 2 aces, 8 kills, 6 digs, 3 blocks; Julia Goncalves - 7 points, 11 assists, 1 dig; Mackenzie Fyke - 1 kill, 1 dig; Demi McDonald - 10 points, 1 ace, 12 digs; Madison Thomas - 4 points, 2 aces, 4 kills, 10 digs; Kaylee Giles - 5 kills.
The Lady Trojans will face the Avery Bulldogs for the area championship on Friday at 6 p.m. at  Paris High School.

GRAND SALINE — Big Sandy won 3-0 over Yantis in Class 1A volleyball bi-district playoff action played here Tuesday.
Big Sandy won by scores of 25-10, 25-9, 25-11.
Yantis stats include: Lila Hurley - 1 ace, 5 digs;  Angelica Sandoval - 1 kill, 2 tips, 5 digs, 5 blocks; Josey Wetzel - 1 kill, 2 tips, 5 digs, 4 blocks, 1 assist; Ashley Bagwell - 3 aces, 1 kill, 7 digs, 2 points off free ball; Molly Bell - 2 kills, 2 digs, 3 blocks; Destiny Garces - 1 tip, 1 dig, 6 assists; Amber Bagwell - 2 digs; Trinity Warren, Vanessa Stone - 1 dig each.
“We had a very rough start to the season but when it came time for district we were almost a completely different team. A bunch of people didn't expect us to make it as far as what we did and i am very proud of the girls for fighting to get to the playoffs. Playing against Big Sandy was different because the teams we have previously played against weren't that tall. Big Sandy has very good hitters and they played well. I have new ideas for next season with stuff to work on,” said Yantis head volleyball coach Jamie Gilliland-Garcia.
