BIRTHRIGHT — The North Hopkins Lady Panthers hope to blend experienced veterans with younger players to build a playoff contender this year in basketball.

The Lady Panthers have three starters returning and several players who saw a lot of playing time last year returning.
Kelsey Buchanan and Chelsey Crouch lead five returning seniors, four sophomores, and two freshmen into the season. Three-year starter Stephanie Gamez is out for the season with a hip injury.
"Losing Gamez will be difficult for us, she has played varsity for three years and is a great leader and we also lost Madison Wenrick who probably would have started. She is now at Commerce," Coach Larry Tucker said. "Crouch and Buchanan have been with me since they were freshmen. They are my captains and I expect a lot of good things from them."
Baile Gammill and Allegra Thomas are sophomores who saw a lot of action last year.
Tucker also added another talented sophomore in Miranda Rushin who played junior varsity at Saltillo last year. Seniors Brittany Flanagan, Chelsea Houser and Denise Calixto will be back along with sophomore Samantha Freeman and freshmen Sheyenne Mitchell and  Sydney McQueen.
"I have been pleased with the girls in early practices because they work really hard. Several of them spent a lot of time in the gym this summer and it is showing," Tucker said. "Rushin is a good addition, she is fundamentally sound and Houser has improved to become a big factor for us.
Tucker said Flanagan is a good three-point shooter and Calixto is solid on defense.
"The freshmen, Mitchell and McQueen are catching on quickly and Freeman gives me a spark off the bench on both ends on the floor," Tucker said.
North Hopkins played at Bland for a scrimmage this Saturday. They will open the season with games at home this week.
On Tuesday, Nov. 5, the Lady Panthers play against Fruitvale and Friday they host rival Sulphur Bluff. JV games begin at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity contest.
