OVERTON — It was a 28-21 ‘heartbreaker’ which might come back to haunt Cumby.
With the score tied at 21-all late in the game, Overton put together a 96-yard scoring drive and break the tie to win the district opener over the Trojans.
“We couldn’t get it in after they scored. We lost 28-21, it was a heartbreaker,” said Tom Dracos, Cumby head football coach.
The Trojans had been pointing toward the game at Overton all season.
“As much as this loss hurts, we are going to show that we are true champions,” Dracos said. “A true champion gets themselves back up, dust themselves off and goes back to work.”
Cumby fell to 1-6 overall, 0-1. Overton is now 1-5, 1-0.
The Trojans lost despite having two rushers with more than 100 yards. Quarterback Travis Taylor had 17 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown. Nick Folse ran 16 times for 112 yards and another score. Cody Anderson had eight carries for 28 yards, one touchdown. Jim Evans had 15 yards on three tries and Dustin Heer carries twice for 12 yards.
Taylor completed four of 15 passes for 17 yards. Heer caught one for five and Folse, three for 12.
Cumby hosts Detroit in another key district game Oct. 18.
