District play begins Friday and it arrives just as the Wildcats had planned.
Sulphur Springs wanted to get off to a good start in non-district, get a few wins and rest during the bye week for the pursuit of a second straight undefeated district football crown.
“You want to win them all. That’s just the nature of being competitive,” said Greg Owens, Sulphur Springs head football coach. “But we were working to get ready for district.”
Sulphur Springs comes into district play riding a two-game winning streak.
After going 1-2 to start they year, the Wildcats have victories over Paris and Corsicana. The Wildcats offense is running in high gear, scoring a school record 77 points to defeat Corsicana.
Sulphur Springs features the No. 1 team offense in 14-4A, the Wildcats are averaging 444.6 yards and 39 points per game. The Wildcat defense is allowing 417.4 yards per game, ranked No. 4 in the district.
The Wildcats host rival Mount Pleasant Friday at 7:30 p.m. to start district. Mount Pleasant is 3-2 in non-district. The Tigers are averaging 37 points a game and feature the No. 3 offense in district and the No. 2 ranked defense.
