MOUNT PLEASANT — Sulphur Springs had a strong showing Saturday as they took third and fourth places in cross country competition.
“We had a good race on Saturday, it was pretty much a district preview,” said Andy Holt, Sulphur Springs head cross country coach. “Every team was there except for Marshall boys. The boys were led by Carter White took fourth place this week (16:49 time). White looked much better this week and ran a much smarter race. Nathan Mabry was our number two runner at 16:52, and finished right behind Carter. They finished eighth and ninth respectively. All the boys ran well this week and we will need each one of them to run well when the district race comes around. We will be fighting for the third spot at district and I think it will come down to just a point or two on who will advance to the regional meet. Jacob Gatewood had his best race of his early career with a time of 17:08. He has been running hard in practice and he is seeing the hard work payoff. “
Holt continued, “The girls finished third place behind Pine Tree and Hallsville. We were led this week by Madeline Massey (20:25 time). She finished third overall and looked strong running. This is the kind of race I have been expecting Madeline to put together, and I know she will continue to work hard to stay at the top. Madison Ramirez, at 20:45 was our second runner and she finished fifth overall. She didn't have her best race, and still finished fifth. Myranda Pierce also ran a solid race (21:52) on Saturday. I was also pleased with how are fourth, fifth and sixth runners ran. They ran together and worked together to run a good race. “
