SS tennis team routs MP in district

    The Sulphur Springs tennis team defended their home courts well Tuesday taking a big team win over Mount Pleasant.
    Sulphur Springs won the match 15-4 overall; in district points it was the Wildcats taking a 10-3 point win.


    All the Sulphur Springs girls in singles action won their matches. Morgan Sutton, Magan Smith, Abbey Martin and Anne-Marie Winborn blanked their opponents, winning by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Kezli Cook won by a 6-3, 6-2 tally. Caroline Burns won in three sets, taking the battle by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 10-5.
    The Lady Cat netters also swept girls doubles. Cook and Smith teamed to win 6-0, 6-0; Sutton and Martin were a dynamic duo, winning 6-0, 6-1; the combo of Burns and Winborn also won by 6-0, 6-1.
    In mixed doubles the team of Steven Payne and Jaspyn Johnson lost 6-2, 7-5.
    In boys singles, Sulphur Springs won four of six matches. Taking wins were: Ryan Wilson, 6-3, 6-0; Johnathan Philo, 6-1, 6-2; Jesse Allen, 6-3, 6-0 and Tommy Helffrich, 6-0, 6-0. Losing matches were: Drew Sant, 6-3, 6-0 and Jayce Johnson, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
    The Wildcats took two of three boys doubles matches. The duo of Wilson and Allen won 6-1, 6-2; Sant and Helffrich rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Johnson and Philo lost 6-0, 6-3.
    Remaining fall schedule for the Sulphur Springs tennis team includes:
Sept. 24 Hallsville     home            4 p.m.  varsity
Sept. 26    at Hallsville        4 p.m.   JV
Oct. 1    at Texas High        4 p.m. varsity
Oct. 3    at Kilgore        4 p.m.    JV
Oct. 8    at Marshall        4 p.m  varsity
    Hallsville, Texas High and Marshall will be district competition.
