Sulphur Springs took their first district varsity win in fall team tennis, downing Pine Tree 12-9.
Sulphur Springs had a district match score of 10, compared to eight for Pine Tree.
The match held at the high school courts Tuesday was very competitive with the home team winning according to a report from head coach Randy Namanny.
The Sulphur Springs rolled to wins in five of seven singles matches.
Magan Smith defeated Alex Black, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) tiebreaker; Abbey Martin downed Victoria Nix, 6-1, 6-2; Anne-Marie Winborn smoked Hannah Puckatt, 6-1, 6-0. Caroline Burns and Jaspyn Johnson won by default. Kezli Cook lost to Holly Patterson, 6-3, 6-1 and Morgan Sutton was defeated, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 by Kundanika Lakkadi.
Girls doubles swept through with no losses. Cook and Smith beat Lakkadi/Patterson, 6-3, 6-2. Sutton and Martin teamed for an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over Nix/Puckatt. Burns and Maddux won their match by default.
The mixed doubles team of Steven Payne and Winborn fell to Hurly/Black, 6-0, 6-2.
In boys singles - Ryan Wilson won a marathon battle with Cody Jones, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker), 7-5; Tommy Helffrich won his long battle over Kyle McGough 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-2) taking two tiebreakers.
Other Sulphur Springs players fell in boys singles - Drew Sant was blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Aakash Lanka; Jayce Johnson lost to Fernado Hurley, 6-1, 6-1; Jesse Allen was defeated by Kody Johnson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and Steven Payne lost to Escobar, 6-3, 6-4.
In boys doubles, Sulphur Springs won two of three matches. Sant and Helffrich team to beat McGough/Escobar, 6-4, 6-3; Wilson and Allen were a dynamic duo, winning 6-4, 6-0 over Jones/Johnston. The combo of Johnson and Philo fell to McGough/Escobar, 6-4, 6-3.
The Wildcats team will play today at Pine Tree in junior varsity action. The varsity will play Jacksonville Saturday in Lindale.
The next home match for Sulphur Springs is Tuesday against Mount Pleasant at 4 p.m.
