Lady Cats take first, third in tourneys

Sulphur Springs teams did well in weekend tournament action at two different locations.

    The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats junior varsity volleyball team won the Eustace JV Volleyball Tournament.
    The Lady Cat JV won theirpool games Thursday with wins over Ferris, 25-20, 22-25, 13-15; Palestine, 25-20, 25-20; Edgewood, 25-23, 25-18. In Saturday's championship bracket play they won over Eustace 25-19, 25-20 in the early game. The JV Lady Cats beat  Rice Consolidated, 24-26, 25-13, 15-8 to advance to the championship game. Sulphur Springs edged  the Brook Hill School, 25-20, 27-25 to claim the championship.
    “It was a great weekend for our girls. They played well the entire weekend and battled to get the job done. I am very proud of  them,” said coach David Carrillo.
    In varsity tournament play at the Lady Vandal tourney, the Lady Cats took third place in the gold bracket. Sulphur Springs won 2-1 in Friday pool play. The Lady Cats lost to Spring Hill 11-25, 23-25 and beat Mineola, 25-21, 14-25, 25-11 and downed Harmony, 25-21, 25-16.
    In early Saturday action, Sulphur Springs defeated Chapel Hill, 13-25, 25-16, 26-24. The Lady Cats lost to Harmony in a tough three-game match, 22-25, 27-25, 21-25.
    Later Saturday the Lady Cats beat Brownsboro, 25-14, 25-18 to claim third place.
    “The Lady Cats played hard all weekend long. I am very pleased with the results we produced in our first varsity tournament of the season,” said Lady Cats head coach Michelle Namanny. “We still need to work on being more consistent, but overall I am thrilled with our progress on the court.”
    Senior Destiny Wade tallied 25 kills, 7 blocks; Jessye Castro turned in 11 kills, 3 blocks; Kasey Moore had 13 kills, 6 blocks; Katie Barnett totaled 34 assists; Shakoja Debase contributed 21 assists and Jacey Mitchell added 16 assists.
