Taking on the No. 1 team in the state for a football scrimmage did not intimidate Cumby, in fact it might have help the Trojans in the long run.
“I can’t be more pleased with what we saw from the scrimmage,” said Tom Dracos, Cumby head football coach.
Tenaha, the preseason No. 1 state pick in Class 1A, Div. 11, won 1-0 over Cumby in the varsity and by the same score against the junior varsity.
The scrimmage was held Saturday at Van Memorial Stadium.
“The saying is you have to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run. Our team has learned to crawl and we saw a few of the kids stand up for the first time,” Dracos said. “Tenaha is a great team, speed everywhere and you could see after the first few plays our kids began believing they could play with Tenaha. It was great to see.”
“Defensively we gave up a huge play right out of the gate for a 70-yard touchdown pass and that was the last touchdown they had for the rest of the scrimmage. Our kids did a great job hustling to the football and taking good angles.”
Dracos added, “Offensively, we moved the ball fairly well, but silly mistakes kept causing us issues not to be able to sustain a drive. Cody Anderson and Nick Folse ran the ball well. I feel like we are real close to putting it together. Changing to a no tight end spread offense is a huge change for our kids and we are still having to think of our assignments. We will get there. I am very excited about the potential of our football team.”
The Trojans scrimmage Dallas Gateway Friday at 6 p.m. in Dallas.
