The Wildcats will finally get to see someone new on the field.
After pounding on each since Aug. 5, Sulphur Springs will be involved in a football scrimmage Friday at (Texarkana) Liberty-Eylau.
The Wildcats have been enjoying cool weather during the early part of morning workouts. Sulphur Springs has been working out 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday the team was forced to practice in the indoor facility after rainfall of over an inch and a half left the outdoor fields too muddy for use. Thursday practices began at 3 p.m.
“We are ready to see someone else,” said Greg Owens, Sulphur Springs head football coach. “I don’t know that much about Liberty-Eylau. They do have a stud free safety.”
Davion Hall at free safety is a 6-3, 193-pounder with 4.4 speed. He is a pre-season all-state pick by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
The Leopards are coming off a 4-6 season, but predicted to win the title this year in the District 13-3A.
Owens added, ‘We need to come out with energy and be physical at the line of scrimmage.”
The Leopards are led by head coach Brian Brown.
“We are excited about the opportunity to play Sulphur Springs, They are well respected and it will give us some experience against the spread offense,” said Brown. “We are looking for some consistency with our new offense. We would like to see how our quarterbacks perform against good competition. Our team has looked really good in our practices so far. Our senior class has stepped up and become good leaders. Scrimmaging larger schools like Sulphur Springs gives us a chance to evaluate all of our players, especially with our second and third units.”
The scrimmage is set for Harris Field, the natural grass field used by the Leopards.
The freshman and JV will begin play at 5 p.m. with varsity to follow at 6:30 p.m. The varsity will go 12 and 12 with first and second teams, then kicking teams. The event will end with a 30-minute running clock scrimmage.
