For the first time in several years, Sulphur Springs will be able to begin the fall tennis schedule with full varsity and JV teams.
The Wildcats and Lady Cats open the season Thursday at Greenville. Action begins at 4:30 p.m.
“This is the first season we can begin with two full teams. We have close to 30 players,” said Randy Namanny, Sulphur Springs tennis coach.
Sulphur Springs doesn’t just have numbers this year - they have talent as well according to the coach.
“Our top four places on the girls and boys teams are both very competitive,” said Namanny. “Our top five or six are pretty good players. They are good and we have depth we have not had in recent years.”
Greenville in recent years hasn’t been one of the tougher opponents. Namanny is interested to see how it will work out this year.
“We usually handle them (Greenville) pretty easily. We are not thinking about going over there and losing,” Namanny said. “I just want us to play up to our potential.”
Namanny said, “We will get to have a varsity team for boys and girls and a full junior varsity. This the first time we have done this since I have been here. This is the most interest and players we have had in tennis. I am glad to see it. The girls and boys have really been working hard and we’re looking forward to a successful year.”
