ALEXANDRIA, La. — The Hopkins County Angels won 5-4 over Alexandria, La. in the opening round of the Dixie World Series on Sunday in a thrilling, hard-fought contest.
Coach Chris Voorheese said the squad will advance to play Alabama today at 8 p.m. in the next round of winner’s bracket play. The game will be broadcast on www.jockjive.com
The winning team plays East Ouachita, La. team 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Voorheese was proud of the way the Hopkins County team played in the opening contest.
The team fell behind early 2-0. But Hopkins County came back to tie the game in the top of the second. The Louisiana squad put up two runs in the bottom of the second. Hopkins County responded with three runs in the top of the third.
Hopkins County went up 5-4 after three full frames and made the score hold up for the final.
Makayla Buchanan got the complete game pitching win. She closed out the game with three scoreless frames and struck out the final two batters of the game.
“We had some great defensive plays and battled through threats in all innings,” Voorheese said. “Alabama will be a tough team.”
Jasmin Tapley at catcher was a defensive standout with throwing out two base runners and one out at home plate.
Parris Pickett and Buchanan scored the first two runs for Hopkins County.
During the three-run rally, Chandler Bain scored on a passed ball, Grace Magnuson scored on an RBI hit by Journi Hohenberger. Voorheese reached home on an RBI by Tapley.
