The Hopkins County American All-Stars avoided elimination with a 12-1 win Wednesday night over Palestine in the Dixie Darlings State Softball Tournament.
The squad will play Winnsboro at 6 p.m. today in a state semifinal game. The winner of that contest will advance to the state championship game against Mount Vernon at 7:30 p.m. The loser is eliminated.
In the win over Palestine, Hopkins County came out strong and took control of the game early.
“We jumped out to a good lead,” said coach Tanner Ragan. “We played well. I think we are getting better in each game. Now we have to beat Winnsboro to play for state.”
Ragan said his team has scrimmaged both Winnsboro and Mount Vernon earlier in the season.
“They both are good. We are going to have to play well to beat them,” Ragan said.
Mount Vernon and Winnsboro both have losses to each other in the tournament. Hopkins County has one loss to Palestine earlier in the tournament.
Ragan added, “It’s a double elimination tournament and we are playing it out. It has come down to the three top teams. I hope the win over Palestine gives us confidence going into tonight. Win or lose, I am very proud of this team.”
