COMMERCE — The Hopkins County All-Stars swept through the Dixie Angels Division X-play State Tournament, taking the softball title in undefeated fashion.
Hopkins County won 15-2 over Pineland in the semifinals and defeated a stubborn Bullard team 3-1 to claim the state championship Wednesday night.
In the Pineland game, Hopkins County took a 2-0 lead. But Pineland tied the game with a two-run homer in the second. Hopkins County edged ahead 3-2 in the third, then blew the open with rallies in the fourth and fifth inning to win 15-2. Katelyn Rusheon was the winning pitcher. Journi Hohenberger got the final three outs pitching a scoreless fifth inning.
The Hopkins County squad won 3-1 over Bullard. The squad built a 3-0 lead, but Bullard rallied for a run in the fifth after getting two hits. Pitcher Makayla Buchanan struck out two batters. Down to their final out, Bullard tried to score but the throw from Jazmin Tapley to Buchanan got the final out on a tag play at home plate.
“Then the celebration started,” said coach Chris Voorheese. “We were more relieved than anything. The girls were happy for the win. Bullard gave us a tough fight. We had a good tournament. We managed to get through without losing a game.”
The team is 8-0 for the year. The Hopkins County squad advanced through the regional tournament undefeated, outscoring foes, 53-0. At state they outscored opponents, 50-6.
Voorheese said, “We have a good group of girls. They enjoy playing together and they have been successful.”
The Hopkins County All-Stars will now advance to the Dixie Angels World Series slated to begin Aug. 2 in Alexandria, La.
The team will be having fundraisers to help with the expenses of attending the national tournament.
