Buddy Ivery gets an opportunity many football star don’t get, one more chance to thrill.
Ivery, a speedster with 4.5 speed, will be wearing No. 6 for the blue team on offense and looking to make it into the end zone.
The 5-7, 205-pound running back, rushed for 1,332 yards on 185 carries, averaging 7.2 yards a tote. He scored 11 touchdowns. Ivery also caught 12 passes for 92 yards during last season at Sulphur Springs.
Ivery will be in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes All-Star Football game. The contest is Saturday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 at the Rose Stadium gate.
The teams are composed of the best football players in East Texas.
Ivery will be going up against players like district foes Hallsville, Pine Tree and Marshall. More than 100 athletes have been selected for the teams.
In recent years, Sulphur Springs players have been on both squad, coaches and cheerleaders also were asked to participate.
This year Ivery is the lone representative of the football program.
“I know several of the guys playing. It should be fun,” Ivery said. “I remember guys from some schools. It will be good to see them again. It’s the best players in this area. I think it will be fun.”
Sulphur Springs head football coach Greg Owens said, “It’s a great opportunity for Buddy and a big honor to be selected among some of the best players in East Texas to play one more high school game. He is a great talent and will bring a lot to the game.”
