MESQUITE — The first state qualifier of the year did not go the way Sulphur Springs had hoped.
In Saturday 7-on-7 action at West Mesquite the Wildcats went 1-2 in pool play and did not advance.
“We lost 34-32 on a failed two-point play at the end of regulation against West Mesquite,” said coach Matt Young. “Both sides of the ball played very well. Alex Burney and Willy Ivery had strong games receiving. Melroy Givens and Zack Spigner played well in the secondary.”
Young continued, “In the second game we fell short in a close battle with Arlington High. Quarterback Larry Pryor made some nice throws and had pass breakups. Mitchell DeYong and Isaiah Lacy were busy catching balls while Tim Monk and B.J. Stribling were active on the defensive side. In the finale we won handily over Wylie East with a strong defensive performance. Deandre Wright had an interception and the corners of Givens and Stribling kept Wylie East in check. Offensively things were clicking with Burney, Cain Cody and Dillon Carpenter moving the sticks. The kids did not advance, but performed well against some solid competition.”
