Wildcats in tough 7-on-7 event Saturday

    Sulphur Springs athletes are jumping right into the fire of the toughest 7-on-7 competition in the area.

    After just one tournament and only a few practices, they will participate Saturday in the Azalea Orthopedic 7-on-7 tournament in Gilmer.
    Competition will be held at Buckeye Stadium and surrounding fields starting at 9 a.m.
    Sulphur Springs is taking more than 140 players from middle school to varsity levels.
    Wildcats varsity coach Matt Young said the field at Gilmer was probably the toughest around.
    “This is a good tournament, we have won it before,” Young said. “This is the best field I have seen at this event in six years.”
     In the varsity - field 1, pool 1, Sulphur Springs will open play with their gold team taking on Daingerfield at 9:45 a.m.; at 10:30 a.m., the gold team plays Gilmer; at 12:45 p.m. Grace is the opponent for the gold squad.
    In the varsity - field 2, pool 2, the Sulphur Springs blue team plays Lindale at 9 a.m; the blue Wildcats meet Mount Pleasant at 10:30 a.m.; at noon, the blue team takes on Tatum.
    The other varsity pool is composed of Whitehouse, T.K. Gorman, Rockwall and Pine Tree.
    In junior varsity action - Sulphur Springs plays the Whitehouse maroon team at 9 a.m.; at 11:15, the Wildcats play Pine Tree and the third game is between Sulphur Springs and T.K. Gorman at 12:45 p.m.
    The Sulphur Springs eighth grade blue team will play on field 8, in pool 8. They take on Whitehouse at 11:15 a.m. and then meet the Longview green team at 12:45 p.m.
    In the other eighth grade division - the Sulphur Springs gold team will be in pool 9, on field 9. They play T.K. Gorman at 9:45 p.m.; then take on Gilmer black at 10:30 a.m. before meeting Pine Tree at 12:45 p.m.
    In seventh grade action - the Sulphur Springs gold team will be in pool 10, field 10. They play New Diana at 9:45 a.m., then take on Gilmer at 10:30 a.m. and at 12:45 p.m. face Grace Community.
    In other seventh grade competition - the Sulphur Springs blue team is on field 11, in pool 11. They take on Whitehouse at 9 a.m.; then at 11:15 a.m., collide with Lindale before finishing pool play with a 12:45 p.m. game against Pine Tree.
    Teams advance to semi-final games from pool plays with championship games to be held during afternoon finals.
