The UIL state track meet in Austin is the reward for lots of toil and sweat for athletes from Amarillo to Brownsville.
Nine athletes from the county will be participating in the event which is Friday and Saturday at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
The local team with the most participants heading to Austin is Miller Grove. The Hornets had a very successful run at regional and now will have six athletes making the trip.
Logan Miller, Nathan George, Titus Lehman and Quinten Stovall will be participating in the the 1,600 meters relays (4x400) event. Alternates for the event are Trey Lester and Riley Mitchell.
Individual event competitors - Miller (3,200-meter run); George, 800-meter run, 1,600-meter run) and Miller, (3,200-meter run).
At regional, George was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02; he was first in the 1,600-meter run, timed at 5:00. Lehman finished second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:07. Miller won the 3,200-meter run in a time of 11:14.
Miller Grove coach Gary Billingsley said the last state competitor from Miller Grove in track was 1999 when Lindsay Watson competed in the 300-meter hurdles. She finished in sixth place.
Clint Wolf of Sulphur Bluff won first in region in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet 11 inches last Saturday in Bullard. He will be competing at state in Austin on Friday at 9 a.m.
Competing from Saltillo are sophomore Cade Daniel and senior Clayton Jones. Daniel jumped 20-8 to win regional in the long jump. Jones had a time of 11:17 for second in the 3,200-meter run at regional.
