MAUD — The North Hopkins Panthers season ended at Maud Friday evening as the Cardinals shut them down 5-1 to take the bi-district series two games to one.
It was case of early inning mishaps that cost the Panthers as Maud scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on three infield errors two walks. The Cardinals added two more runs in the top of the third inning on an error, a double and a single. Maud added a home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
The Panthers would not fold and pushed a run across in the top of the seventh inning with Dakota Jones scoring, but ended the game on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
Whaley tossed into the fifth inning with two outs for North Hopkins, giving up just four hits with fanning five Cardinals. Jones came on in relief with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and struck all four batters he faced. The Panthers' Cody Nix, Blake Adams and Rheston Sills each had one hit in the game.
"It's always disappointing to lose in the playoffs," Coach Tim Henderson said. "I have very high expectations for next year."
The Panthers lose Nix, Jones and Dakota Miller to graduation, but the rest of the team remains intact.
North Hopkins ended the season with a 15-10 record.
