EMORY — Grant Russell, junior track athlete at Rains, recently won the Class 3A Region II triple jump championship and earned a berth in the state track meet.
Russell jumped 44 feet 10 1/2 inches to win the event, setting a school record.
He has also set a school record in the long jump at 21 feet 11 inches. He ran the 100-meter dash, 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay. All three events he represented qualified for area and 800-meter relay qualified for regionals.
Russell was the area champion for District 13-3A and 14-3A and a regional qualifier in the long jump and 4x200 relay. He was the triple jump champion for the district.
Russell was also the high point man during the Blackberry Relays in 2013 at Lindale.
In 2012, the was a regional qualifier in the triple jump, 4x400 relays and the district long jump champion.
As a freshman in 2011, he qualified for regional in the triple jump.
He was a regional qualifier for Rains in Region III, Div. II powerlifting. Russell was a second team all-district defensive lineman in football.
“Most importantly Grant Russell is a tremendous young man who makes excellent choices both on an off the field of play. He makes outstanding grades, 97 grade average, and is a true leader in and out of the classroom. He excels in Boy Scouts which he is working on the highest honor, the Eagle Scout Award, which he should get this month. I can honestly say if my two young sons grew up to be like Grant, I would be one proud father,” said Jeff Lester, Rains head track coach.
