North Hopkins
falls to Roxton;
playoffs begin
vs. Maud

Special to the News-Telegram

    BIRTHRIGHT — It was a fitting end to a roller coaster season for the top three teams in District 17A baseball. Roxton defeated North Hopkins 3-2 on a dramatic three-run home run by Lion hurler Walker Wharton with two outs in the top of the final inning. Panther batters were unable to get any offensive spark in their half the seventh.
    Had the Panthers won the game, they would have taken the district title. The loss gave the Sulphur Bluff Bears, a team the Panthers beat twice, the district crown with Roxton taking second place.
    "It was just a great high school baseball game. I am proud of our guys, they played hard and did a great job. Roxton just beat us, we didn't beat ourselves," Coach Tim Henderson said. "It was a great game for the fans to watch.  Congratulations to Roxton and to Sulphur Bluff on their seasons."
    The Panthers took a 1-0 third inning lead when Alfredo Orozco scored on a passed ball. The lanky freshman had singled to get on the base. Jessie Williams fifth home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth inning extended the Panther lead to 2-0 and that's how it stayed until the fateful seventh inning.
    Kevin Meza gave up three hits and struck out nine batters in the game, while Silas Whaley gave up one hit and had one strike out. Roxton's Wharton gave up four hits to the Panthers while striking out 15.
    North Hopkins will meet Maud in a three-game bi-district series beginning Thursday afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. contest at North Hopkins. The second game will be played in Maud with a 6 p.m. start time. If a third game is necessary, it will be played in Mount Pleasant Saturday at 2 p.m.
