TEXARKANA — Iowa softball signee Michaela Johnson led Texas High to a 5-0 win over Sulphur Springs here Friday night.
Johnson, the No. 3 hitter in the order, was a perfect 4 for 4, with a triple and double, plating all five runs.
The top three hitters for Texas High combined for seven of the team’s nine hits.
“We just got beat, Texas High took it to us,” admitted David Carrillo, Sulphur Springs head softball coach. “We only had two hits. We really did not have a scoring chance. We had three errors which helped Texas High.”
Texas High scored two runs in each of the first two frames to take a 4-0 lead. The Lady Tigers added another run in the fourth and won by the 5-0 final.
The home team also got good pitching as Megan Hillis won the game, striking out six and surrendering two hits on the night.
Meagan McCullough slapped a double and Kiara Johnson added a single for the only two hits for the Lady Cats.
Taking the pitching loss was Hailey Dixon. Dixon faced 33 batters in six innings, striking out eight and walking four. She allowed five runs, three earned run. She threw 125 pitches, 78 for strikes.
The Lady Cats fell to 18-11 overall, 5-3 in district. Texas High is now 22-7, 6-2.
“We are now in third place in the district,” Carrillo added. “We need to just keep on playing. We have Hallsville next. We should regroup and put together a good game at home.”
The Lady Cats host Pine Tree on Friday, April 19 for their final home game, Senior Night is set.
