Sulphur Springs athletes will be trying to put their best foot forward as they bound into District 14-4A track action Wednesday and Thursday in Mount Pleasant.

“I am excited to see how we do at the district meet. We will have our full team assembled for the first time since the Gilmer meet,” said Matt Young, Wildcat track coach. “Also, leading into the district meet, we back off our kids and look for their bodies to respond in a good way with top times and performances.”
Young continued, “As always, Texas High will be very solid.  Hallsville and Marshall also have great track programs.  Mount Pleasant is running really well in the relays.  You throw in some talented individuals from Pine Tree and you realize points are going to be hard to come by this week, but I am confident in our kids.We are looking forward to Carter White and Nathan Mabry fighting for points in the mile and two mile.  Willy Ivery, Barry Stribling and Brennan Brock are going to be competitive in the long jump with Heath Howard in the shot and discus. Our relays will be fighting for a trip to the area meet as well. Our individual events are one day at a time. First goal is to make finals and then go get a medal.”
The action begins Wednesday with field events including the shot and discus at 9 a.m. At 10:15 p.m. finals will be held for the 3,200 meter run. At 11 a.m., field events continue, through 2 p.m. when a lunch break is held.
At 3 p.m. Wednesday the running preliminaries start for events ranging from the 100 hurdles to the 200-meter dash.
Thursday action begins at 5:05 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relay. Events continue and if they follow according to schedule event end at 8:50 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay. The awards presentation is scheduled at 9:15 p.m.
“I think that we match up very well in several events with other teams in our district. I hope to get several young ladies out to the area meet,” said Triston Abron, Lady Cat track coach. “I expect us to medal in long distance runs as well as middle distance and relays.”
Abron added, “In this district, every team is tough. They is an extremely competitive district. We’ve had a little layoff, but that helps heal our soreness and injuries. We’’ll be fine.”
