Wildcats meet HP in playoffs

    Sulphur Springs and Highland Park have met before in the Class 4A boys soccer playoffs.
    The results have not been good for the Wildcats.


    Sulphur Springs head soccer coach Andy Holt is ready for his team to write a different ending to the story when the two teams clash today at 7 p.m. in the playoffs.
    “We are looking forward to the matchup and the opportunity to play Highland Park. They have a good team and good program for several years. They have ended our season the past two years, and we are looking to end their season this year,” Holt said.
    Last year, the Scots took a 3-1 overtime win in a game played in Rockwall.
    This season, the Wildcats have been on a roll after winning district with an undefeated mark.
    Sulphur Springs is coming off a thrilling 3-2 win in the second overtime period at Frisco Liberty. The Wildcats defeated Carrollton Creekview 2-1 in the opening round of postseason. The Wildcats are 19-3-5 overall the 19-4A champs. Sulphur Springs has won district in boys soccer three of the last four seasons.
    Highland Park is 10-6-6 and had a 4-1-3 mark in 20-4A action. The Scots won 3-1 over Prosper in the area round. Highland Park opened postseason with a 5-0 win over North Lamar in the bi-district playoffs.
    The Scots have 10 seniors on their roster. Top scorers are Will Turrentine, Grant Kreeger, Kevin Crabb and Dawson French. Turrentine French, Kreeger, Dominic Duffel and David Uhr had one goal each against North Lamar,
     The Wildcats have a 13 players who are in their final year. Tony Bravo is the leading scorer on the team. Bravo had all three goals in the win over Frisco, despite playing with injuries. Bravo is the all-time leading individual scorer for Sulphur Springs with 75 total goals.
    Holt said, “Our preparation is going well. We are a pretty loose team. When its time to play the guys will show up with determination and focus. Tony is getting better every day so I expect him to be doing extremely well for Friday night’s game. Highland Park is the same; they have been for the past couple of years. They are talented and will play hard. They will make you earn anything you get.”
