LINDALE — Jesse Ortiz of Sulphur Springs bested the field and was the only Wildcat to earn a ticket to the state finals during recent competition at the Region III, Division I meet.
Ortiz, a junior lifter, lived up to his No. 1 ranking taking first. He had a squat of 315, bench pressed 165, dead lifted 345 for a total of 825 pounds.
Scott Galarza was fourth in the 132-pound class. He had a 250 squat, bench pressed 170, had a dead lift of 320 for a 740 total.
Taking third was Dedric Smith in the 181-pound class. He squatted 500, turned in a 275 bench press, deadlifted 500 for a 1,275 total.
Heath Howard was seventh in the 275-pound division. He had a 455 squat, then bench pressed 350 with a 470 dead lift for a 1,275 total.
Jess Jenkins took eighth place in the super heavyweight division. He has a 450 squat, bench pressed 300 with a 470 dead lift for a 1,220 total.
Dakota Patton and Luis Gamez competed, but did not have a total score.
The Wildcats took ninth place as a team scoring 11 points.
Lindale, the host school, finished first with 21 points. Waxahachie was second with 19 points and Marshall took third with 16 points.
The state finals will be March 23 in Abilene at the Taylor County Expo Center.
