Cumby 9,
Honey Grove 8
HONEY GROVE — Cumby staged a late comeback as the Trojans took a 9-8 victory on the road Friday.
Down 4-1, Cumby came storming back to tie the game at 4-all going into the bottom of the fourth. The Trojans used an RBI single by Colton Speights and an RBI double off the bat of Cody Anderson to mount the comeback.
Designated hitter D.J. Lackey had two hits and plated a pair of runs. Speights, Anderson and Charlie Potts also had multi-hit games. Cumby had the lead 9-4 into the bottom of the seventh, but they worked out of the jam.
“With the tying and winning runs on base and two outs, Honey Grove starting pitcher Brandon Spann hits a bomb to dead center field, Trojan centerfielder Luke Sartin made an over-the-shoulder catch to save the game for Cumby.  Luke's catch is one of the best outfield plays I think I have ever seen in high school baseball,” said Scott Mabe, Cumby head baseball coach.” It was so dark, we could not tell that he had caught the ball until he threw his hands triumphantly into the air. He turned as soon as the ball was hit and caught the ball on the dead run.  He said he saw the ball all the way, we could barely even see him.  I thought it was a walk-off home run.”
Speights got the pitching win, his third of the year. Potts pitched three innings, striking out one and allowing three hits in the thriller.
Cumby, 4-1, hosts Sulphur Bluff at  today at 4 p.m.
