GREENVILLE — The Sulphur Springs Wildcats took another big step in the 19-4A soccer race with a 6-0 win over the Lions.
The win Saturday moves the Wildcats to a perfect 5-0 record in district play. The squad is 14-3-5 overall.
Caleb Brown led the scoring with three goals for Sulphur Springs.
Sulphur Springs had a 1-0 lead at intermission then went on a 5-0 run in the final half. The first goal was scored by Erick Robles.
“We finally got things going in the second half. We started off with Samuel Gallegos heading in a cross from Christian Gutierrez. It was a great goal that really got things started for us,” said Andy Holt, Sulphur Springs head boys soccer coach. “Brown then scored to make it 3-0. Within minutes Leo Sanchez got the fourth goal. Brown got the last two goals to finish the scoring out for us. Caleb got the hat trick and was a very impressive performance for him. He started his second game as a forward and scored three goals. Caleb is fast and was able to use his speed to get behind the defense several times. I'm not sure who had the assists on the goals other than the second goal.”
Holt said, “We are in first place we have a bye Tuesday and will play against Friday at Princeton. We need the bye to heal up. We've got some guys that are banged up right now and need to get healthy.”
The Wildcats play the rest of the regular season on the road. They are at Princeton Friday, then on March 18 trek to Paris. They finish the district schedule March 23 at North Lamar in Paris.
