Sulphur Springs fans of track and field action can see local action here today at the high school track.
The field events begin at 4 p.m. with running events starting at 6:45 p.m. with the 4x100 relay. The 2,400-meter run will be held at 4:15 p.m.
Teams attending include Sulphur Springs, Sherman, Denison, Mount Pleasant and Paris.
Action will be held in three divisions - varsity boys and girls and junior varsity boys.
This is the first full track meet to be held in Sulphur Springs in many years.
“As far as I know, since 1989 we have not hosted a meet of this size. There have been some duel or tri-meets, but nothing official like this meet,” said Matt Young, Sulphur Springs boys track coach.
Sulphur Springs track athletes are working hard to get into shape for the rest of the season and district with just one meet under their belt.
They began the season Feb. 23 in Pine Tree with girls and boys teams turning in mixed results.
The meet today will be a chance for Sulphur Springs athletes to show their form in front of home fans. Sunny but chilly conditions are expected with temperatures in the low 50s. Not ideal for track and field action.
Sulphur Springs will compete March 8 in the Buckeye Relays held in Gilmer.
The track teams will be idle during spring break and not compete the week of March 15. They return to action March 22 in Paris. The Lindale meet is next and set for March 28. The district meet is April 10-11 as the best take to the track in Mount Pleasant. Area will be held April 18 in Royse City. Arlington will host the regional meet, April 26-27.
