BIRTHRIGHT — The North Hopkins Lady Panthers ended their season on a positive note, sending their seniors out with a come-from-behind 39-38 win over McLeod Friday night. Down 23-13 early in the third quarter, a full court press led the Lady Panthers back. Still trailing 32-28 going into the final quarter, North Hopkins never quit and rallied for the win.
For seniors Briana Weigel, Samantha Gamez, Melony Huffman, Macy Griner and Alexus Garcia is was a fitting end.
"My seniors have worked so hard for me these past three years. I wish we could have done better record-wise, but I wouldn't trade my time with these kids for anything," Coach Larry Tucker said. "They have laid a strong foundation for the team in the future. They have given us something to build on and I appreciate each one of them."
Griner, Allegra Thomas, and Chelsey Crouch each had seven points to lead the Lady Panthers. Garcia added five, Baille Gammill four, Huffman and Weigel three each, Madison Wenrick two and Brittney Flannagan one.
"Garcia's five points in the third quarter led us back on offense and Weigel played the best game of her career. Weigel, Gamill and Thomas played great defense in the final quarter to help bring us back," Tucker said. "Griner's leadership will be missed, she gave me a coach on the floor and getting Huffman back has helped us on both ends of the court."
Despite losing five seniors, the Lady Panthers return nine lettermen next year.
"I am ready to start practice for next year," Tucker said. "We played a lot of young talent this year and five or six of them saw considerable playing time. We are going to build on this year and set our goal to making a playoff run next season."
