TEXARKANA — In a battle of Wildcats, it was Sulphur Springs coming out on top, blanking Whitehouse 2-0 in the opening round of play in the Border City Shootout.
Sulphur Springs scored on a set piece about 17 minutes into the game.
Senior Tony Bravo connected with Erick Robles on a through ball. Robles made the most of his opportunity and hammered the ball into the back of the net.
Whitehouse started the game with a strong attack with several shots on net. Sulphur Springs stopped all scoring tries as the 1-0 lead held up as the margin at the half.
In the final half, the only goal came from Sulphur Springs.
“Our second goal came with about 15 minutes into the second half. This time, Robles found Bravo on the end of a pass. Bravo beat their goalkeeper to the ball and passes it by him for the score,” said Andy Holt, Sulphur Springs head boys soccer coach. “We played one of the best games we’ve played all year. We have Texas High today. They won their game last night as well.”
Texas High rolled over Liberty-Eylau, 7-1.
Sulphur Springs is also scheduled to play Liberty-Eylau at time to be determined.
Games Saturday will be set later, depending on the outcome of Friday games.
“We could be in consolation or the championship game. We want to be in the championship game,” Holt said.
