MARSHALL — The Sulphur Springs Wildcats finished the first half of district play taking an 83-68 defeat at the hands of Marshall in 14-4A basketball action.
The Wildcats had nine players score in the contest, led by 14 from Isaiah Lacy and 12 by freshman Cain Cody.

The loss dropped the Wildcats record to 0-5 in district, 6-22 overall.
Marshall is 20-8 for the year, 4-1 in district. Top scorers were Garren Jernigan with 33; Chris Brown had 15. Freshman Tiandre Jackson had 12 points, 12 boards.
"Despite the score, I was pleased with how we played. I am not really into moral victories, but we played well. If we play this well against all the teams in district, we will win a game," said Jeremy Josey, Sulphur Springs head boys basketball coach. "Marshall just played lights out, but we stayed with them. We competed. Marshall is the kind of team, that if you are off your game or don't try, they can beat you by 50 or 60 points. We had a good effort."
The coach said the Wildcats stayed within striking distance, just trailing 19-13 after one period. At the half, Marshall had a 40-33 the lead.
"We got back in the game. We cut the lead in the second half and kind of relaxed. That was the wrong thing to do," Josey recounted. "Marshall got hot and hit three straight 3-pointers and their lead was back out of reach. That pretty much sealed it. It was still one of our better games, the results might not show it."
Josey added, "We are improving, I can tell it. We are playing hard and doing lots of good things. Marshall is just a very good team. We have Mount Pleasant next as we start the second half of district. We've learned things from our first five games in district. "
